MEASURING / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Measure an L-shaped room

Split an awkward plan into clear rectangles, keep the dimensions traceable and calculate area and volume.

The useful bit

The calculation is only as useful as the room outline and dimensions behind it.

Sketch first, measure second

Draw the actual outline and label each measured edge. Mark the two rectangles that make up the L without overlap. Decide whether you need floor area, wall area or the clear internal volume: these are different quantities.

Measure between the relevant finished faces. A skirting board, chimney breast, alcove or sloping ceiling can change the quantity you need. Keep a sketch with the readings so that someone else can reconstruct your calculation.

A worked calculation

This is a mathematical example, not a measured room. Rectangle A is 4.20 m by 3.10 m; rectangle B is 2.00 m by 1.80 m. Their areas are 13.02 m² and 3.60 m², giving 16.62 m² in total.

If both parts have a constant clear height of 2.40 m, the volume is 16.62 × 2.40 = 39.888 m³, or 39.89 m³ to two decimal places. If the heights differ, calculate each rectangular volume separately and add them. A sloping ceiling needs a different geometric model.

Check the outline closes

Compare the sum of the short horizontal lengths with the overall horizontal dimension, and do the same vertically. A mismatch may indicate a missed recess, a transcription error or a measurement taken from another face.

Take a second set of dimensions with the instrument repositioned. Keep the raw readings rather than replacing them with a rounded average. The saved benchmark research found room-testing descriptions on Bob Vila, but no complete published reference dimensions; the practical lesson is to make your own outline and raw dimensions visible.

Area is not your purchase quantity

Flooring layout, tile pattern, pack size and cutting waste affect the order quantity. Apply any allowance after calculating the geometric area, and label it separately. Do not add a generic waste percentage to every task without checking the layout.

For wall finishes, calculate each wall and state whether openings are deducted. For insulation or heating decisions, room volume alone does not establish performance or system size.
