EVIDENCE & APPROACH

Show the conditions.
Keep the limitations.

A useful tool guide tells you what was checked, how it was checked and what the result cannot establish.

Source-backed guidance, with clear limits. Original equipment tests have not yet been conducted. Research observations date to 21 September 2026; editorial publication is 7 October 2026. This is not a fresh check of every source.

HOW TO READ THE GUIDE

Four kinds of evidence

We keep the author’s reported experience, a manufacturer’s statement and our own future testing separate.

01

Manufacturer information

An exact-model specification or compatibility statement from official documentation. Useful for narrowing a choice; not an independent test.

02

Source-reported testing

A named publication’s account of using a tool. We state its conditions and gaps, and link to the original page.

03

Original field records

Reserved for equipment we have actually checked with published conditions and readings. No completed original equipment test records are currently claimed.

04

Not verified

A missing reference, unreviewed video result or unknown model combination stays unknown. An affiliate disclosure is not proof of testing.

THE RESEARCH BEHIND THIS GUIDE

Five useful publishing references

Source observation · 21 Sep 2026

These are sources and editorial references, not partners or endorsements. Historic product findings do not become current UK buying advice.

01

Laser Level Review

Specialist laser-tool publisher

Connect a model review to a check procedure, accessories and a calculation tool.

An LM90C review describes a successful 63.8 m reading from a white car and a failed reading from the brickwork behind it. This is an observed result for that sample, not a full-range accuracy certificate.

02

THISisCarpentry

US carpenter publication

Publish the setup, individual readings and unexpected results alongside the job.

The precision-laser article describes station checks, approaching the receiver from above and below, and anomalous readings retained in the results. Its table compares a two-station difference, not a single-distance error.

03

Skill Builder

UK trade media

Start with a trade task and connect the comparison to a practical checking guide.

We reviewed the article text, images, video links and chapter labels. The full comparison videos were not audited, so we do not quote an unverified winner, accuracy result or maximum distance.

04

ToolGuyd

Author-led US tool publication

Keep agreement between tools separate from proof of accuracy, and track model-specific limitations.

The General Tools LTM1 review compares its readings with a Bosch GLM15, while explicitly leaving open which is closer to the true distance. The Bosch stakeout article is reporting on an earlier notice, not an independent error test.

05

Bob Vila

Large home-improvement publisher

Learn from the task-based test pages; its publishing scale is not a small-site blueprint.

The laser-level page describes repeated drops, but does not publish a complete before-and-after two-axis error table. A high score does not establish zero error. The distance-meter page describes room tasks without a published raw reference dataset.

WHAT AN ORIGINAL RECORD NEEDS

A result you can inspect

The first practical checks can use a small number of tools. Their value comes from the record, not the number of products on the bench.

Identify the sampleExact model, firmware where relevant, reference point, accessory, battery state and operating mode.

Describe the conditionsMeasured distance, target material, light level, weather, setup and reference measurement.

Publish the readingsRepeated results, failed readings, both axes where relevant, measurement method and uncertainty.

Keep the limits visibleA one-sample result is not a brand failure rate. A check after a knock is not laboratory calibration.

Retail relationship

The business behind Laser Notes operates 22 related retail websites covering laser measuring tools, laser levels and accessories. Product illustrations are supplied by related retail catalogs: DISTO Laser, Line Level and Huepar LLAV. These are commercial relationships, not independent testing evidence.

Product images are illustrative and may show different models from those discussed in a cited test. Any future affiliate, supplied-sample or sponsored relationship will be disclosed on the relevant page.

UK scope & publication

Our audience is UK tradespeople, installers and experienced DIY users. Dimensions use metres, millimetres and square metres. US articles are cited for their methods; US codes and product ranges are not treated as UK requirements.

Calculators demonstrate mathematical conversions; they do not establish the accuracy of a tool or the suitability of a building design. Source observations are dated separately from editorial publication so historic findings remain identifiable.
