SETTING OUT / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Cross-line or 3 × 360°?

Choose planes around cabinets, tiling and partitions rather than choosing the highest number on the box.

The useful bit

Count the reference planes the job needs, then check where those planes can actually reach.

Start with the installation

A horizontal cabinet line and one vertical alignment may be served by a cross-line instrument, depending on its coverage and where it can stand. A room-wide reference, a partition transfer or a layout using two vertical planes may benefit from a multi-plane instrument.

A 360° horizontal plane does not imply a vertical plane, a plumb point or verified squareness. Read the exact plane arrangement rather than treating all products marked 360° as equivalent.

Cabinets and tiling

Choose a datum that relates to the finished installation. For cabinets, check the floor at several positions and allow for the proposed cabinet and worktop arrangement. A level reference helps you compare positions; it does not make the existing floor level.

For tiling, test whether the beam is visible where the next course will go and whether the stand blocks access. Pencil marks preserve the datum when a person, cabinet or tile interrupts the line. Recheck those marks when moving the instrument.

Partitions and ceiling transfers

A vertical plane can help transfer a floor layout upward, but the correct use depends on the instrument geometry and the task. Check the actual intersection, line width and mounting position, and independently confirm the finished layout.

Two nominally perpendicular vertical planes need a suitable squareness check when the tolerance matters. Self-levelling tells you the instrument can settle within its operating range; it does not certify every plane relationship.

What the benchmark pages establish

Laser Level Review describes a Huepar HP-603CG sample, its controls, mount limitations and horizontal-axis checks. Those sample observations are useful; the stated receiver range is not a complete published range test.

Skill Builder has a UK ten-model comparison landing page with sections on visibility, accuracy and outdoors. Our research read that page on 21 September 2026 but did not audit the full video, so we do not name a winner or repeat unverified measurements. A practical comparison should record obstructions, moves and final checks on the same job.
