The mount matters as much as the thread
A guide to 1/4-20, 5/8-11, adapters, adjustment and the clearance your installation needs.

A secure fit is only the first check: also confirm clearance, height and stability.
Read the complete thread specification
Many tools and accessories use 1/4-20 or 5/8-11 threads, but the actual specification must be checked for your equipment. The fraction describes nominal diameter and the second number threads per inch; a similar-looking thread is not necessarily the same thread.
Use an appropriate adapter with sufficient clearance and engagement. Do not force a connection, assume an unlabeled insert is correct or let a long screw press into an unintended part of the tool. Follow the instrument and mount instructions.
Check the job envelope
For a low tile datum, check minimum line height above the surface. For cabinets, check the usable adjustment range. For plumb transfer, confirm that the mount does not block the bottom point or line.
Look at where the tripod legs, pole, magnetic base or clamp will sit during the whole task. A mount can connect correctly and still put the instrument in a position where the plane is obstructed or the setup can be knocked.
Keep adjustment stable
A fine-adjustment control is useful only if the mount holds its position after the control is released. Recheck the datum after adjusting height or rotating the instrument. Allow the laser to settle and inspect the clamp or fixing.
THISisCarpentry describes a 5/8-11 direct mount on one instrument and a particular adapter clamp on another that could detach during movement. That historic observation concerns those samples and setups; it is a reason to inspect the whole assembly rather than compare thread size alone.
Some bases provide a measurement function
A specialised distance-measuring base can do more than hold the instrument. The historic Leica DISTO X3/X4 review discusses DST360 as part of a point-to-point measurement system. A generic tripod adapter does not reproduce the base's angle-sensing function.
For a useful accessory record, keep the exact part number, thread, minimum height, adjustment travel, blocked points and source date together. Our benchmark research does not establish compatibility for every current Leica, Bosch, DEWALT, Huepar or MiLESEEY accessory.
